5 Elements of an Appealing Digital Signage Display

When setting out to create a visually stimulating digital signage display, it’s easy to get frustrated. Where do you start and how do you make it creative without being over-the-top or distracting? As a marketing professional, and having a hand in creating graphics for Inova Broadcaster™ digital signage software, I have a few tidbits to share to keep you from getting overwhelmed when creating new digital signage views in the contact center.

1. Use an interesting, but subdued background. It’s much easier on the eyes to read dark text on a light background than vice versa, especially when viewing signage from a distance. When selecting the background for your view, choose one that has some texture to it, but uses a lighter color. Every now and then it’s fine to use a view that has a more colorful background, such as for holidays or birthday announcements. For day-to-day views though, keep the background simple so attention stays focused on what’s really important — the data.

2. Make elements of the view large enough to be seen from a distance. When inserting grids, charts, graphs and other media into your view, make them large enough for everyone to easily see. Agents need to quickly glance up and get the information they need without having to squint or attempt to distinguish between data points. The more quickly they can view the data, the more quickly they can adapt to changing conditions and take appropriate actions.

3. Use labels! To me, there’s absolutely nothing worse than looking at a chart that has no title and no labels for the x- and y-axis. No matter how obvious the chart may be, agents and others viewing the displays (like visitors and management) shouldn’t have to spend time deciphering what charts mean.

4. Don’t cram too much into one view. Digital signage software allows for views to be rotated so take full advantage of this feature! Views can be set to rotate after a specified time period so data on all views is accessible within a matter of seconds. It takes more time to interpret lots of data in one view than simply spreading data out over several views.

5. Make your views unique and attention-grabbing, but be sure to follow corporate guidelines. It’s always more fun to create displays that incorporate unique elements, like video, pictures and other graphics. It’s also appealing to use complimentary and contrasting colors. However, some companies have regulations for digital signage so be sure to check your corporate branding guide to find out if you have to include the company logo, specific colors or other brand identity elements. Either way, there are lots of options to keep digital signage fun and interesting for your contact center agents!
